Ardgillan Community College
Balbriggan is Now Open
FINGAL'S newest secondary school, Ardgillan Community College in Balbriggan, will open its doors to pupils for the first time this week. Construction on the new € 3.5 million complex at Castelands began in March and was completed last week by Co Tyrone-based familyowned firm Western Building Systems after an accelerated 22-week construction period.
The new three-storey 18-classroom postprimary school contains modern science laboratories, specialised home economics, computer and technology suites, and general purpose classrooms. The project was a full design and build turn-key Western package, and includes all mechanical and electrical installations, fitted furniture and internal finishes, as well as entrance roads, basketball courts, storm attenuation systems and rain-water harvesting systems.
Senior contracts manager, Shane Taggart, said the firm's expertise in delivering off-site, system-designed buildings within accelerated programmes had enabled it to apply the same management principles to provide more traditional, permanent projects within rapid construction programmes.
'The new school is designed and constructed to the most up to date building codes and standards in terms of sustainability and energy efficiencies.
'The building is constructed as a permanent traditional building but completed within a fast-track programme, and has a life span of over 60 years.'
School principal, Michael O'Leary, was happy with how the project progressed.
'I am very impressed by the standard of workmanship and service provided by Western. They delivered a high quality building on time and they dealt with all our concerns immediately and without difficulty.'
