New business park opens its doors
The first commercial privately owned business park has opened in Coalisland.
Western Business Park is the brainchild of local entrepreneur Martin McCloskey. The four-acre, seven-unit site is located at the top of the Washingbay Road directly adjacent to Springisland Shopping Centre. Mr McCloskey’s dream has been more than 20 years in the making having bought half the site from the Ulster Fireclay Works in 1982 and the second half from Coalisland District Development Association in the early 90s.
The businessman has located his own company, Western Building Systems, which employs 90 people to the new park.
“My own company has grown to a position where we employ 90 people and we have a healthy turnover, despite the challenging trading climate. That said, times were tough for me when I started off, and I can appreciate that young companies need to keep their overheads to a minimum.
“Hopefully, this park gives local business people the opportunity to concentrate on doing what they do best without having to constantly worry about the financial burden of building or buying a new premises” he said.
Of the seven units built within the park, space has already been let to 3D Steelworks, AM Electrical and Patsy Taggart’s Funeral Home.
3D Steelworks managing director, Shane O’ Neill said: “3D Steelworks is a company which is going places. At the minute, we’re trying to set up a dealership in Latin America. It’s a great source of pride for our people to be able to say that we’re in a position to penetrate these far flung export markets from our base in Coalisland”.
Chairman of the Coalisland District Development Association Jimmy Canning welcomed the completion of Western Business Park, and described it as a “fitting tribute to Coalisland’s rich industrial heritage”.
The current mayor of Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council, Mayor Councillor Robert Mulligan welcomed the new business park.
He said: “The Northern Ireland Economy is such that 98% of all businesses are small enterprises. These units, three of which have already been availed of, are a welcome boost to the local economy.
“In the current economic climate any business venture is to be welcomed. I congratulate Martin McCloskey on this, his latest venture and for the employment his company has provided in the borough for many years.”
