LEADERSHIP
Western Building Systems was established by Martin McCloskey in 1982. Martin, a joiner by trade, first began to experiment with the concept of prefabrication by developing steel framed garage units, but it wasn’t until Martin began to notice the growing demand for mobile classroom units while on occasional roofing jobs at local schools, that Western Building Systems began to grow from a two man operation to a major local employer.
Now with five divisions, Western Building Systems offer an array of products in a number of sectors including health, education, commercial, leisure and residential.
From his time as a joiner, Martin has learned how a total commitment to customer service could help a local building firm flourish in a competitive market. The commitment to service and quality is at the heart of our business ethos, and is strengthened by Martin’s personal philosophy, which emphasises family values, acknowledges community responsibility, and holds the values of honesty and integrity as indispensible both inside and outside the office environment.
The emphasis of the organisation is very much on an ‘all hands on deck’ approach with everyone pitching in as and when required. In 1998, when the Washingbay premises was unfortunately gutted by a fire over the Christmas holidays, employees came into work on Christmas Day to make sure that off site work to a modular school building would be completed for local children returning in January.
The no nonsense, hard work approach to business has fostered an atmosphere of openness and innovation at Western. We have learned to broaden our core offering and are quick to develop new business opportunities at home and abroad. Significant milestones in recent years include our successful acquisition of a €25 million education contract to deliver seven new schools within a 20 week period in 2008 in the Republic of Ireland; and our work on modern, high-dependency and intensive care units in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, and a new, two-storey oncology department at the Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
