Western ’09 projects showcase expertise in education sector
Rapid-build specialist Western followed its spring ’09 contract win in Balbriggan with the successful completion of three schools projects at Strathearn College and Gaelscoil na Mona in Belfast, and at Coláiste na hInse in Laytown, Co Meath.
All three projects were completed during accelerated, fast-track programmes in the latter half of 2009.
At Gaelscoil na Mona in Belfast, three classrooms and a resource unit were completed in October to a rigorous new Department of Education specification using thermal wood panelling and external metal clad finishes. Working in partnership with Belfast-based architects Mackel and Doherty, Western pulled out all the stops to part-build the permanent EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rated A3 structure off site, completing the project on site in September for opening mid-October.
Senior Contracts Manager Shane Taggart believes that the two gaelscoil projects in particular mark out a new milestone in Western’s achievements in the education sector:
“Gaelscoil na Mona marked our first, permanent custom-built Irish language school in Northern Ireland, and was also our first collaboration with renowned Belfast architectural firm Mackel and Doherty. The Irish medium sector is in vibrant health on both parts of the island, and we’ve every confidence in winning more contracts from similar schools in the future”.
Running in tandem with the Gaelscoil na Mona project, Western was also engaged in a second gaelscoil project, this time at Coláiste na hInse in Laytown, Co Meath.
The single-storey, steel-framed, temporary accommodation block project involved the construction, mechanical and electrical fit-out and furnishing of science laboratories and home economics and material technology classrooms. Involving a team of up to 40 skilled Western staff and sub contractors, the 8 weeks off site and 4 weeks on site phased schedule adhered to a full range of guidelines stipulated by the Department of Education. The Coláiste na Inse project was fully completed in October 09.
Western’s third summer/autumn ’09 schools project involved the construction and fit-out of a modular classroom village and a sportshall at Strathearn College in Belfast, a collaborative project with Samuel Stephenson & Sons architects, the longest established architectural partnership in Northern Ireland. Despite this project running to a very exacting 8 week timescale, Western successfully delivered this £0.5m phase of a wider, extensive development on time and within budget.
Martin McCloskey was upbeat about Western’s prospects within the education sector moving forward:
“Our track record now extends geographically across Ireland and Britain, and the fact that we have successfully delivered two, high profile projects for the Irish medium sector on both parts of the island undoubtedly means that we’re best positioned to compete for these projects as and when new opportunities arise”.
